MEADFA 2026: Rabat at the Heart of the Future of Duty Free and Travel Retail in the Middle East and Africa

The duty free and travel retail industry is preparing for another major gathering. From 15 to 17 November 2026, international brands, airport operators, retailers, distributors and industry professionals will meet in Rabat, Morocco, for the MEADFA Conference 2026.

Organised by the Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA), this year’s edition carries particular significance as the association celebrates its 25th anniversary. The conference will take place at the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Rabat at Kasr Al Bahr, bringing together leading decision-makers from across the regional and international travel retail industry.

An Association at the Heart of Travel Retail

Officially established in 2001 by nine major organisations from the Middle East travel retail sector, MEADFA has progressively become one of the industry’s leading representative organisations in the region.

Based in Dubai Airport Free Zone, the association now has 75 members and works to strengthen relationships between retailers, brands and suppliers, support industry development and encourage knowledge-sharing through conferences, seminars and training programmes.

Beyond traditional duty free, MEADFA is increasingly addressing an industry undergoing profound transformation: changing consumer behaviour, digitalisation, the growing influence of luxury, evolving traveller profiles and the development of new African markets.

Rabat: A Strategic New Destination

The choice of Rabat for the 2026 edition is particularly significant.

Following the 2025 conference in Dubai, the event moves to the Moroccan capital for the first time. The decision highlights MEADFA’s commitment to African markets and the significant growth opportunities emerging across the continent.

Rabat also represents an important connection between Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This geographical dimension reflects the changing nature of travel retail, where opportunities are no longer concentrated exclusively around the traditional Gulf hubs.

The 2026 conference is therefore expected to provide an important platform for discussing the development of the industry across the wider Middle East and Africa region.

The Middle East: A Key Luxury Market

The Middle East has established itself as a strategic region within the global travel retail industry.

Major airports across the region have become international showcases for luxury brands, beauty, fragrances, spirits, gourmet products and premium accessories.

Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah are all contributing to the transformation of the traveller’s shopping journey. Airports are no longer simply places of transit. Increasingly, they are becoming shopping and experiential destinations in their own right.

This evolution is particularly beneficial for luxury and beauty brands seeking to reach an international, high-spending clientele.

A Rapidly Changing Industry

Travel retail in 2026 is no longer based solely on the traditional concept of “duty free”.

Today’s consumers expect more than a price advantage. They are looking for experiences, exclusive products and personalised services.

Technology is therefore playing an increasingly important role. Data, artificial intelligence, loyalty programmes, digital payments, personalised offers and omnichannel experiences are becoming integral components of modern travel retail strategies.

Retail environments are changing as well.

Airport stores are increasingly adopting concepts inspired by luxury boutiques, with greater emphasis on storytelling, personalised services and immersive experiences.

Beauty and Luxury Brands in the Spotlight

Among the categories benefiting most from the growth of travel retail are beauty, fragrances, cosmetics and luxury goods.

International travellers represent a particularly attractive consumer base for brands. They are exposed to global product ranges, often seek exclusive products and are highly receptive to limited editions and travel-exclusive formats.

The Middle East is also an exceptionally dynamic market for premium fragrances and cosmetics.

For international brands seeking to expand across the region, travel retail can therefore provide a strategic gateway to consumers in the Gulf, as well as to the international travellers passing through the region’s major aviation hubs.

MEADFA Awards: Celebrating Innovation

The 2026 conference will also feature the MEADFA Awards, recognising companies and initiatives contributing to the development of travel retail across the Middle East and Africa.

For their fifth edition, the Awards will recognise achievements across categories including Best Retailer, Best in Marketing Strategy, Sustainability & CSR, and Customer & Supplier.

A Lifetime Achievement Award will also honour an individual who has made a significant contribution to the development of the industry.

The 2026 Awards entries must be submitted by 30 September 2026, while the ceremony will take place on 16 November in Rabat, during the conference.

A New Identity for 25 Years

The anniversary year is also marked by a new visual identity for MEADFA.

In August 2026, the association unveiled an updated identity designed to reflect its evolution and its ambition to strengthen the position of the Middle East and Africa within the global travel retail industry.

The new visual system retains the association’s representation of the Middle East and Africa while adopting a more contemporary and institutional aesthetic.

The new identity accompanies MEADFA’s broader activities across industry representation, membership, training, sustainability and the Awards.

A Major Meeting Point for Industry Leaders

The MEADFA Conference is also an important networking platform.

Over three days, participants can connect with representatives from airlines, airports, retailers, brands, distributors and suppliers.

The 2025 edition in Dubai attracted 736 participants, a record attendance for the event, with the venue reaching full capacity. The figures demonstrate the growing interest in the commercial opportunities offered by the Middle East and Africa.

For international brands, attending the conference is therefore about much more than maintaining an institutional presence. It provides an opportunity to identify new business partners, meet regional operators and gain a deeper understanding of market developments.

2026: Growth, Innovation and New Opportunities

The 2026 edition comes at an especially interesting time for travel retail.

International tourism flows continue to influence the strategies of retailers and operators, while Middle Eastern markets are investing in new airport infrastructure, retail concepts and experiences designed for international travellers.

At the same time, Africa is emerging as a market with considerable potential, supported by the gradual development of new infrastructure and the emergence of new consumer markets.

The combination of these two dynamics explains MEADFA’s growing strategic importance for international brands.

Rabat Becomes a Travel Retail Hub

From 15 to 17 November 2026, Rabat will become a key meeting point for the duty free and travel retail industry.

With its 25th anniversary, new visual identity, Awards programme and conference bringing together leading industry professionals, MEADFA is reaffirming its role as a platform for dialogue, networking and business development across the region.

The event will be closely watched by professionals in luxury, beauty, fragrances, gastronomy, aviation and retail — sectors that are all directly influenced by the evolution of traveller-focused commerce.

As experience, personalisation and innovation become increasingly important, travel retail across the Middle East and Africa appears to be entering a new phase.

For MEADFA, the next 25 years could prove just as significant as the first.
