From November 21 to 24, 2024, the Principality of Monaco will host JOYA, an international jewellery fair designed to showcase an exceptional array of jewellery—from antique pieces to contemporary creations. Held at the elegant One Monte-Carlo and directed by scenographers Christ & Gantenbein, this unique event promises to captivate art lovers, collectors, and jewellery professionals alike.
A Visionary Project by Delphine Pastor-Reiss and Vanessa Margowski
Driven by the vision of Delphine Pastor-Reiss and Vanessa Margowski, JOYA is founded on a deep artistic vision and a shared love for jewellery and its rich, complex history. These two women, long-time partners in the art world, are no strangers to pioneering work. In 2005, they co-founded the 11 Columbia gallery in Monaco, a leading space in contemporary art and design, which enabled them to collaborate with renowned figures such as Jousse Entreprise, Esther Schipper, and Air de Paris. JOYA is a natural evolution of their professional journey, blending their expertise in contemporary art with a passion for jewellery. With JOYA, they hope to establish an annual rendezvous in the Principality, featuring a select group of fifteen exhibitors from around the world, each meticulously chosen.
The duo aims to transcend the traditional concept of a trade fair by creating a culturally enriching experience. For them, JOYA is not just a commercial exhibition but an artistic event designed to redefine jewellery's place in the art world. JOYA therefore goes beyond displaying rare and precious jewels; it also integrates lectures, gatherings, and partnerships with prominent cultural institutions.
Monaco: A History of Luxury and Art
The Principality of Monaco has symbolized refinement and elegance for over a century. This small coastal region, nestled between the sea and the mountains, has attracted an international elite since the founding of the Société des Bains de Mer in the late 19th century. With its palaces, iconic casino, and glamorous atmosphere, Monaco quickly became the backdrop for high-profile social and artistic events.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Monaco transformed into a haven of artistic innovation, with spectacular events like Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, which first captivated the Monegasque stage in 1911. Artistic influences continued to grow, particularly with the marriage of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier III, which brought Monaco worldwide visibility. Later, iconic figures like Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Newton added to the region's cultural prestige.
Today, Monaco is recognized as a hub for art, luxury, and rare collections. JOYA’s installation aligns with this tradition of cultural excellence, seeking to make the Principality an unmissable destination for collectors and admirers of unique jewellery.
A Prestigious Venue: One Monte-Carlo
JOYA will be held in the prestigious One Monte-Carlo district, a luxurious and refined area situated just steps from the Hôtel de Paris and the Casino de Monte-Carlo. This modern complex, designed by architect Sir Richard Rogers, reflects the glamour and elegance of Monaco. The choice of this venue is highly symbolic, built on the site of the former Sporting d’Hiver, a historic building from 1931. One Monte-Carlo stands as a meeting point between Monaco’s illustrious past and its visionary future.
The fair will take over several iconic spaces within the complex, including the Salle des Arts, the Salle Cocteau, and the auditorium, offering an elegant and sophisticated setting for visitors. These spaces will be carefully curated by Swiss design studio Christ & Gantenbein, whose subtle, elegant approach guarantees an atmosphere conducive to appreciating the jewellery on display.
An Exquisite Selection of International Exhibitors
JOYA brings together a discerning selection of exhibitors who reflect the diversity and richness of the jewellery world. Among the participants are prestigious names like Elie Top, known for his neo-gothic style, and Gioielleria Pennisi, renowned for showcasing rare antique and vintage pieces. Modern and contemporary creations by designers such as Karry Berreby, Dorothée Potocka, Tatiana Verstraeten, and others will also be on display. Each of these artists offers a unique vision of jewellery, from meticulous craftsmanship to bold and avant-garde designs.
The diversity of exhibitors reflects JOYA’s approach, aiming to offer visitors an immersive experience that spans eras and styles, exploring the full richness of jewellery heritage and contemporary creativity.
Cultural Partnerships for a Unique Event
To strengthen its commitment to culture and art, JOYA has partnered with several renowned institutions. In collaboration with the Ecole des Arts Joailliers, the fair will host a series of lectures and panel discussions that encourage deeper reflection on the jewellery world. The specialist bookstore L’Escarboucle will also be present, offering visitors a selection of literature on jewellery, allowing for an even deeper exploration of the craft’s history and artistry.
Additionally, Monaco’s New National Museum has invited visual artist Julien Carreyn to create a photographic series inspired by the collection of jewellery and stage accessories deposited by the Société des Bains de Mer. This unique series will be displayed to the public, providing a contemporary perspective on historical pieces. The Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, founded by Prince Albert I, will also exhibit Monaco’s treasure collection, enriching the event with these exceptional heritage items.
JOYA: An Ambitious Annual Rendezvous
With its debut edition, JOYA positions itself as a major event in Monaco’s cultural calendar. At the intersection of jewellery, art, and culture, the fair aspires to become an annual gathering for collectors, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts from around the world. This ambition is rooted in the artistic vision of Delphine Pastor-Reiss and Vanessa Margowski, who wish to make JOYA a platform for discovery, exchange, and celebration of excellence in the jewellery field.
By offering a rich and varied program, combining exhibitions, lectures, and networking opportunities, JOYA hopes to attract a diverse audience, from jewellery experts to lovers of beautiful and unique creations.
As a new jewellery fair, JOYA aligns perfectly with Monaco’s spirit, where luxury and art have always held a special place. Backed by a prestigious venue, a network of cultural partners, and a distinctly modern vision of jewellery, this event is set to captivate and surprise visitors. Beyond presenting precious jewels, JOYA aims to be a space for exchange and reflection, where art, culture, and history come together to provide a unique experience. This fair is not only a showcase for exceptional pieces but also a tribute to the art of jewellery and the cultural heritage of the Principality of Monaco.
