A Stellar Year for Hong Kong at Cannes, May 14-22, 2024

The Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC), Create Hong Kong (CreateHK), and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) proudly present "Hong Kong Films @ Cannes 2024” at the Marché du Film 2024, commencing today, May 14, 2024.

2024 heralds a remarkable year for Hong Kong's presence at Cannes.

Featuring exhibitions, seminars, forums, market screenings, and networking events, the campaign aims to empower Hong Kong film industry professionals to shine on the international stage and explore promising business prospects.

Throughout the Cannes fortnight, Hong Kong will showcase its cinematic vibrancy with a diverse array of new productions. The recent success of emerging local talents adds to the anticipation. This year, Cannes visitors can expect captivating exhibitions, thematic seminars, forums, networking events, and the highly anticipated Hong Kong Night. These events will foster invaluable collaborations and provide a platform for industry professionals worldwide to connect, exchange ideas, and establish partnerships with Hong Kong filmmakers.

A delegation of Hong Kong film luminaries, including renowned directors Stanley Kwan and Soi Cheang, veteran actors Louis Koo and Raymond Lam, along with emerging talents Terrance Lau and Rachel Leung, will grace the Festival and Market. They will also participate in panel discussions on Europe-Asia co-production, Hong Kong’s action cinema, and rising Hong Kong talents from May 16-18 at the International Village 117 @ Riviera.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, FDC Chairman, expressed, “The Film Development Council has been dedicated to supporting Hong Kong film productions, both in quantity and quality, and nurturing talents. We are delighted to showcase some of the most exciting Hong Kong productions and promising new talents in Cannes.”

Key Hong Kong industry players will present their spectacular new productions at the Market. The Hong Kong Pavilion at Riviera J11 will host six Hong Kong exhibitors, including Cappu, Celestrial Pictures, Edko Films, Entertaining Power, Fortune Star, and mm2, facilitating business partnerships and collaborations. Additionally, the International Village 117 @ Riviera will offer visitors a plethora of events and networking opportunities. Moreover, key film production companies like Emperor Motion Pictures, Media Asia, One Cool Pictures, and more will showcase their presence at the Market in Riviera and Palais.

The seminar “Hong Kong Perspective in Asia’s Film Market” on May 15 will kick-start the campaign, featuring a panel of film market experts discussing how Hong Kong supports international filmmakers to tap into Asian markets.

Chris Lo, Director France, Spain, and Portugal at HKTDC, stated, “Through our initiatives to support the Hong Kong cinema industry, we catapult Hong Kong companies into the global spotlight, aiming not only to reach but to resonate across international markets. We bolster their presence to amplify their strengths and forge lasting connections on the global stage.”

Official selection and market premiere screenings will feature an extensive program of Hong Kong films. Notably, "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In" by director Soi Cheang is shortlisted in the official selection and will be presented at the Palais des Festivals during a Midnight Screening on May 16.

Hong Kong exhibitors will showcase new productions, including winners of the First Feature Film Initiative supported by FDC, at market screenings at Riviera to generate interest and inquiries.

The comprehensive promotion campaign at Marche du Film will provide participants with a deeper understanding of Hong Kong's unique position as the East-meets-West Centre for International Cultural Exchange and the Regional Intellectual Property Trading Centre.
